which sank in 1737, the “Lastdrager” which sank in 1653, the “Curacao”
which sank in 1729, the “HMS Assurance” which sank in 1753, and the “Evstafii,”

the artifacts and cannons in the back of the catalog.

Description:
The
gold treasure of Captain
Robert Clive (of India fame) was known to have been lost
in the wreck of the English East India Company ship, "Dodington", which
sank in 1755 off the coast of South Africa…but what happened to the gold after
that is a mystery. This auction catalog contains 431 lots of gold pecas
and one lot with an 800 reis coin. These were salvaged from an unidentified wreck in the Indian Ocean, but are
believed by some to be Clive's gold by virtue of the fact that the weight and
composition of the find match almost exactly what was listed on the
manifest of the "Dodington" (653 oz. and 6 dwt.). Some have
speculated that pirates found where the survivors of the “Dodington”
buried the coins, and sailed away with them…only to have their ship sink
in the Indian Ocean (where the coins were actually recovered).
